How can Chiropractic Adjustments help you?

Roll your mouse over these common conditions to learn how chiropractic adjustments can alleviate these ailments. Roll over the spine to learn more about which part of the body is affected when that part of the spine is misaligned.

Conditions

  • Allergies

One of the best ways to improve immune system function is to improve nervous system function. Because the nervous system regulates the immune system, a properly functioning nervous system is better able to coordinated immune cell activity. Chiropractic adjustments have helped many allergy sufferers by improving the health of the nervous system.

  • Arm Pain

Arm pain is a very general term, but underlying many of the conditions of the arm is an irritated, or frankly pinched nerve in the neck. Brachial neuralgia ("arm-nerve-pain") is the medical name for a pinched nerve in the neck. In its acute phase it is probably one of the most painful conditions faced in the chiropractic clinic. The pain is relentless and it is difficult to find a position which relieves the pain. It is often especially bad at night.
A characteristic sign is the so-called "Shoulder abduction relief sign". Raising your arm above your head brings a measure of relief, as it takes the stretch off the nerve. Conversely, carrying a bag of groceries will increase the stretch on the tethered or irritated nerve, aggravating the pain.

  • Asthma

Many chiropractors consider their role in caring for patients with asthma, especially those subject to severe attacks, as complementary to the medical management of the disease. They do regular spinal adjustments to make asthma sufferers more comfortable by helping relieve the muscle soreness and discomfort that can develop during asthmatic flare-ups. Chiropractic adjustments may help reduce the frequency and severity of asthma attacks. The achievements of chiropractic in promoting overall wellness, including enhancing the patient's capacity to cope with chronic ailments, make chiropractors an important part of the health care team that can help asthma patients live more normal lives, minimally encumbered by this incurable, but controllable condition.

  • Bladder Problems

Since chiropractic isn’t a treatment for bedwetting, a thorough examination is necessary. If the bedwetting is caused by nerve interference from the spine, many children see great results with chiropractic care. Find out! We approach these cases with sensitivity and compassion. Your son or daughter will appreciate and understand our explanations.

  • Bronchitis

The lungs and bronchi receive an extensive nerve supply from the spine. Many sufferers of respiratory problems have discovered the benefits of regular chiropractic care. Those with bronchitis, emphysema, or other chronic lung conditions need to ensure that their lungs and bronchi are receiving uninterrupted nerve communication from their spine. Chiropractic is the only healing art that can remove vertebral subluxations and in many cases, from a lifetime of taking drugs for their "incurable" condition.

  • Congestion

Chiropractors treat the sinuses found in the forehead, under the eyes and on the sides of the nose. The structures will get filled with fluid if your body is trying to flush out irritations or allergens. If you are dehydrated, the fluid may get thicker and won’t drain as well. This can lead to infections. So the first course of treatment is to make sure you are well hydrated. The next place Chiropractors look to address is the nerve control of the sinuses. The spinal nerves that exit the top of the spine just below the skull go to the sinuses. If those nerves are irritated because the vertebrae are twisted, tilted or jammed (chiropractors call this subluxations) then the sinuses may not drain or the tissue will make more fluid than necessary. Chiropractors are the only doctors that can correct these problems.

  • Constipation

Constipation is an uncomfortable fact of life for some people, but it can be treated without harsh chemical laxatives. First, it's important that you see a medical doctor to rule out any serious medical conditions. A chiropractor can treat constipation, especially if it's a chronic condition. In some cases, adjustments to the back may help the intestines function normally and relieve constipation. You may experience relief after one adjustment, or it may take several sessions, so it's important to be patient. In addition to adjustments, a chiropractor may also treat constipation with dietary and nutritional therapy. He or she may prescribe a high-fiber diet and ask you to avoid foods that could aggravate your condition. You may also need to increase the amount of water you drink, in order to help your intestines function properly.

  • Croup

Chiropractic care is growing in popularity among parents as initial care for their children. Dramatic results have been reported as infants and children respond positively to chiropractic care. With a healthy spinal column, a child’s body can better deal with the croup and other problems that often make up a young life.

  • Diarrhea / Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable Bowel Syndrome(IBS) is a general diagnosis often used to identify a number of different digestive disorders. Symptoms may include constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, flatulence and bloating. One of the many causes of IBS is spinal misalignment. Misaligned vertebrae can put pressure on spinal nerves and interfere with nerve signals between the brain and the muscles of the digestive tract. This in turn causes the many types of digestive tract problems mentioned above.

  • Difficulty Breathing

Mid back pain occurs from misalignments in the thoracic region of the spine that may be a result of improper lifting, over-exertion, trauma or poor posture. Pain can radiate to the chest area and, at times, even cause difficulty breathing. Chiropractic spinal adjustments can help restore proper spinal alignment and relieve pain and associated symptoms.

  • Dizziness

Dizziness is a common complaint in the chiropractic office. It is a generic term that must be clearly defined and its cause properly characterized and diagnosed for appropriate treatment to be implemented. It is a complaint that is often treatable via chiropractic care.

  • Fatigue

Chiropractic believes that one of the major contributing factors to chronic fatigue is the nervous system. Without proper nerve energy, we cannot stay alert, vigorous and healthy. When something interferes with the flow of nerve energy, we can easily feel tired and rundown. While an organ that is receiving limited nerve energy may still be functioning, it is not functioning at its maximum. The spinal cord, which is made up of all the nerves leading to the organs and tissues of the body, is protected by the spinal column. If one of the bones that make up the spinal column slips out of proper alignment, a nerve can be pinched or squeezed and the function of an organ or gland will be decreased. Chiropractors can locate such misalignments and, through gentle manipulation, restore the spinal column back to its normal alignment.

  • Headaches

As high as 50 million people in the US suffer from headaches. There are 3 main types of headaches... Tension: Tight, constricted pain that wraps around the head, like a vice or a clamp. Migraine: Severe throbbing pain, often one side of your head, and may be associated with nausea, vomiting and light or sound sensitivity. Cervicogenic: Tender to the touch, especially at the base of the skull to forehead and may be worse with movement. Cervicogenic headaches (arising from the neck) are the most common headache encountered clinically. Headaches can be brought on by stress, degenerative changes in the cervical spine, past trauma, and improper neck position (whether at work or while sleeping), misalignments (subluxations) in the cervical spine, irritate nerves, cause muscle spasms and restrict range of motion leading to pain and stiffness. Chiropractic specializes in identifying and correcting the underlying structural causes that lead to headaches. Why cover up a problem with medication when chiropractic can get great results without drugs or surgery?

  • Morton's Neuroma

Morton’s Neuroma is a condition characterized by sharp pain in the ball of the foot, usually between the second and third toes. It is an irritation of the nerve and is commonly associated with fallen arches. This can be a painful condition made worse when weight bearing because the fallen arch or bone press and irritate the nerve. Cortisone injections to reduce swelling or surgery to cut out the nerve are common treatments for this problem, but don’t address the underlying cause. Chiropractic works to restore proper foot function without resorting to injection or surgery. First we analyze the posture, arches and bone of the foot and then correct the underlying cause leading to the pain. We then analyze and determine if you need a support to heal and prevent further irritation. Finally, we give you exercises, stretches and recommendations to keep it from coming back. Morton’s Neuroma is a treatable condition that responds well to conservative chiropractic care.

  • Planter Fasciitis

PF is characterized by sharp often excruciating pain over the bottom or arch of the foot. It occurs due to persistent tearing of planter fascia and is usually worse when standing first thing in the morning or after sitting for a long period of time off their feet and then standing up. The fascia starts to heal until the pressure of standing causes the fascia to re-tear. Left untreated planter fasciitis can result in formation of a heel spur, another painful foot condition. Activator Chiropractic can provide a safe and effective treatment for planter fasciitis. The three-pronged treatment for planter fasciitis involves: 1. Adjusting the bone of the foot, ankle and knee that have become misaligned (subluxated) not allowing the foot to function properly and allowing the arch to drop, stretching the planter fasciitis. 2. Providing proper support for the arch through appropriate arch support to relieve pressure and maintain the arch while it heals. 3. Specific exercises to strengthen the arch so it keeps the problem from returning. In most cases the costly surgery and/or the painful alternatives of surgery or cortisone injections can be avoided and you can get back to your favorite activities without pain.

  • Pregnancy Related Issues

Pregnancy is an exciting and uncomfortable time for mom. Postural and hormonal changes contribute to a host of pregnancy related health issues which respond well to chiropractic care. Sciatica (pain down the leg), low back pain, upper back pain, neck pain, headaches, stomach trouble and joint swelling can all ruin a happy, healthy pregnancy. The Activator Method Chiropractic Technique safely and effectively treats many of these issues. By using special pads, mom comfortably lays face down with her stomach completely supported. Special testing procedures identify misaligned areas that result from altered posture previous trauma or overuse. A hand held instrument applies a safe, gentle and comfortable impulse to restore movement and function, relieving pain and discomfort. The Activator Method also allows mom to be treated right up to the day of delivery. Chiropractic and the Activator is a safe, effective way to help you during your pregnancy without having to resort to harmful drugs.

  • Sciatica

Sciatica can be pain, weakness, tingling, numbness or burning in the hip and or leg. It occurs due to irritation of the sciatic nerve which is a collection of nerves arising from your lower spine and traveling down the back or your leg. Common causes of sciatica are degenerative disc disease, misaligned vertebrae, pregnancy, trauma from a fall or accident, herniated disc or even sitting on something like your wallet. Chiropractic helps reduce sciatic nerve irritation by realigned vertebrae and working with muscles that can compress and irritate this nerve. Once proper motion and alignment is achieved, inflammation and spasm reduce and the sciatic nerve functions again. The key to successfully treating sciatica is to discover the cause, eliminate the cause and show the patient how to keep it from coming back.

  • TMJ & IMS Related HA's

TMJ syndrome is a common and often major contributing factor to tension and migraine headaches. The muscles of the TMJ in particular the temporalis muscles (found over the temples) can go into spasm and reduce blood flow that can lead to trigger points and pain over the sides and front of the head. A hallmark of a TMJ related headaches is waking with a headache over your temples that gets better as the day goes on. This is because you are likely clenching your jaw while you sleep. Stressful situations in which people clench can also increase these types of headaches. Other signs of a TMJ problem include tightness, popping or pain in the jaw while chewing, talking or opening the mouth. The goal of chiropractic is to improve the joint function, decrease the muscle spasms and eliminate the pain. The treatment for TMJ related headaches includes: restoring normal joint function through specific and gentle treatment of the misaligned or subluxated joint and upper neck to reduce nerve irritation that leads to muscle spasm and pain, relaxing tight muscles using a variety of therapies and techniques to eliminate spasms and trigger points in the muscle, and to instruct patients in home care to help eliminate & prevent condition from returning. TMJ & TMJ related issues respond well to chiropractic treatment.

  • Urinary Problems

Urinary frequency, urgency and walking at night to go the bathroom have all been helped by chiropractic. The nerves that control the bladder and pelvic organs exit the spine and pelvis. When your vertebrae or pelvis become misaligned (subluxated) due to trauma, stress or illness, they can compress or irritate these nerves and cause the organs to malfunction. Commonly, they will be hypersensitive and tell your brain it is time to go when your bladder is not really full. You have urgency but then you go only a little bit thus finding yourself going a little bit several times a day. If you are urinating frequently, have urgency, waking at night to go to the bathroom or have experienced persistent bladder or yeast infections, you should be evaluated by a chiropractor experienced in treating these conditions.

  • Wrist and Hand Numbness or Pain

Carpal tunnel syndrome, golfers or tennis elbow as well as frozen shoulder, tendonitis and bursitis are joint related conditions of the arms and wrist that have a strong correlation with overuse. Joints that are misaligned, muscles that are tight, stiff and in chronic spasm can cause pain and lead to numbness and tingling. The Activator Method Chiropractic approach to treatment of these conditions is to: find and eliminate the areas of misalignment and irritation that is contributing to the muscle spasm and swelling, restricted motion and altered sensation like numbness and tingling, provide home exercises/stretches to strengthen and supporting muscles, and make specific recommendations to aid in preventing reoccurrence. This also involves analyzing and treating the cervical and thoracic spine, which is where the nerves originate to the shoulders, elbows and wrist. Other therapies or procedures may also be used to speed healing. Many shoulder, elbow and wrist related problems respond very well without the need for drugs, cortisone injections or surgery.
